Implementation and Practice

As our program expands from an idea into an Evidence-Based Practice, we have been blessed with several opportunities to engage with students and implement our practice within multiple settings and with different student demographics.

Over the past 15-months we have been able to implement Avian-Assisted Intervention in both the Steilacoom Historical School District and in Yelm Community Schools. Both districts provided the opportunity for students with special needs to engage with our birds in an academic environment to facilitate educational and IEP goals by utilizing Avian-Assisted Intervention to decrease unwanted or unnecessary behaviors, increase positive moods within the classroom setting, increase engagement and social skills development, and decrease elopement and isolation behaviors. Avian-Assisted Intervention was highly successful in a Resource Support Classroom, a Functional Learning Classroom (FLC), a Comprehensive Learning Classroom (CLC), a Life Skills Classroom, and an Independent Learning Classroom (ILC).

During the Summer we were able to implement Avian-Assisted Intervention and share our birds with several educational programs throughout Western Washington including Right At School, the Boys and Girls Club of America, Tacoma Metro Parks and Tacoma Public Schools, and Cascade Christian Schools.

As the Summer comes to an end, and the new school year begins, we look forward to new opportunities and helping new students benefit from Avian-Assisted Intervention. We have several opportunities to implement our practice in the upcoming months and will provide an update as those engagements occur.
